Work through one of them and you begin to loosen the fabric of all your fears. Fear of success? You may never taste victory. Fear of failure? That keeps you avoiding those challenges which can grow you and potentially expand your professional and personal opportunities. Fear of public speaking? That limits your interactions. Fear of bridges? That stops you from being independently mobile. Think of a fear that you have held onto for several years now. What's the worst that could happen? I speak in 2017, instead of 2016?" Ah, the power of the positive re-frame.Ģ. Never put dismiss the things you can see in your wildest imagination. My husband David, who just put in a submission to speak at TED, says, "There's no time to hedge and waiver. RUT-BUSTER: Make a "Basket List." Leave the Bucket list for people who need mortality to motivate them. That requires us to notice, reflect and reframe. We have to actively and consciously make sure we spend some quality time thinking positively. Our immune system is smarter than we think. Why do we do this? The same reason we push ourselves to finally take a day off and then catch that virus everyone had. Nothing curates a rut faster than thinking negatively - especially when we have some time to reflect, enjoy and unwind. RUT-BOOSTER: We turn "downtime'' into time to feel down. How can we rut-bust our lives, wherever we are on our journey, and learn how to enjoy the ride, detours and all? The most dangerous thing about a rut is not that it becomes familiar over time, but rather that the longer we feel stuck inside it, the more it saps our curiosity, energy and perception of choice. A good routine grows with us, bending with our needs.īut a rut? A rut has no interest in our well-being. If it's not working for us, we fine-tune it. No doubt about it, a routine can provide a rhythm to life like a heartbeat to our body. Someone else derives comfort from the predictable practice of her routine after a loss. One person can lean on a steady and reliable system of doing things in the midst of transitional chaos. Routines can help contain us during our struggles. It's the key to efficiency and a way we can reduce stress.Ī routine can be a way of steering us between tight passages as we navigate our path. Many of us think they're the same animal, when in fact, they are distinct.Ī routine is our system. Just in case you're wondering, there's a big difference between a rut and a routine. Inside the walls of our ruts, we have all wondered, " How did I get here? Is this my life from here on in?'' Some people describe a feeling of being in a room with no windows and no door.
